I have a new copy of windows XP professional and I need to install it on a new hard drive.
Do I need to partition the drive and format it, or windows XP will do that for me?
How do I install it, and is there a web site that I can go to that will show the installation step by step?
Is there a difference in installation between windows XP home edition and the professional one?
Thank you

The questions that I posted are not answerd yet. Plase, read my questions one more time.
Thank you for the installation hint, but I still need to know about the hard drive formating, is it still like win9x?

Good Luck

HI KJ,
How many times this question comes up. lot of us are fed of typing the answer over and over again. If you spend time reading the forum you will know the answers by now! Here goes I Formatted C,D logical drives then I installed WIN ME in drive D under d:\WIN. NO APPLICATIONS but all the necessary hardware only. Once the system is up & running without any problems, I copied all the XP files into DRIVE D. I choose fat instead of NTFS as once you changed to NTFS you cannot go back !! I installed XP in Drive C under C:\Windows. I think there is a handshake going on between Win ME and XP whilst its installing the windows XP. This will help the XP to install without any problems. The reason I was doing this is that you DO NOT have a good all around hardware support from XP. When XP is searching for software if the CD or floppy is not responding then you can try to direct it to D:\WIN\sys32 or system. Anyway at least now you can switch between XP and ME when you want it. Its still early as you cannot rely on XP as an OS on it own cause there are lot of fine tuning and updated software needed to run smoothly. Until then you will get frustrated if you rely on XP alone. Well if you still insists you can rename the D:\ WIN to D:\Temp and boot with XP and see what happens if all ok then you can delete that folder and try the same trick with the program files folder in Drive D:\ anyway I hope you will hang on to ME for a few weeks as some games do not response to XP. Good luck and enjoy formating and re-installing as thats the fun part. Once the system is up and running you will get bored with it !!! This is an easy way to do it and no insult intended to anyone. Spend time reading the website BAHA sent. Drop a line to say how it went. seeya Dave
