Dear mint:

You open Word. Go to Insert - > Symbol. Check that Font is set to Symbol. Then select the up arrow.

Or you can use the ASCII code in Word. Hold down the Alt key and press "24" and this will isert the up arrow.

Dear mint:

You can still use Alt + 24 to enter the up arrow in Notepad.

Hope this helps.

Dear mint:

Go to Word. Use Alt+24. Highlight the up arrow. Then use Ctrl+C to copy the up arrow. Then use Ctrl+V to paste the up arrow into Notepad. It will look like this. ↑

Hope this helps.

Make it from command line

copy con file.bat
Type what you want and hit enter key
end with control z

File will be file.bat with enter key on line.
Be sure you end with control z (eof)

You go to the end of the line in Notepad and hit enter to have it drop down to a new line.

This is really basic which begs the question of why are you asking? Are you new to text editors or is there something else going on?

Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Suggest they internet search and they learn a skill for a lifetime.

I think everybody is perhaps on the wrong track here.

I interpret what MINT is trying to do as (s)he has a file in Notepad which contains the character "\" at the end of each line instead of an "Enter" (or new para) code.

The object is to do a search and replace to find "\" and replace it with the "Enter" code, so that the lines will be correctly broken up.

Notepad does not have the facility Word does to enter "Special Characters" in the search and replace fields.

So the first suggestion would be to carry out the operation in Word, if that is possible. Word will quite happily edit the text files that I assume are the subject here.

Next option requires a bit more work.

Go into Notepad and open the file.
Go to the end of the file and press Enter to insert a new line.
Use the cursor to highlight the end of the last line (AFTER) all the text and onto the new blank last line. There appears to be nothing there, but the highlighting will show that something has been selected.

Press CTRL-C to copy the selection (or do it from the menu)

Move the cursor back to the start of the document.

Select Edit-Replace from the menu.
Put \ in the Find box
Move the cursor to the Replace box and press CTRL V to paste in the character you cut out. There will appear to be nothing in the box.

Carry on with the replace procedure as normal.

If it doesn't work, you have probably failed to highlight and copy the Enter character correctly - it can be a bit fiddly till you get the hang of it.
