You cannot. Just think of the chaos it would cause if such a thing were possible.

Or do you mean install the Operating System over a Lan. Installing OS and formatting are two completely different things.

While it is possible to install an OS of a LAN, it needs specialised equipment and software. It would be quicker, simpler and cheaper just go out and buy a DVD or even a plain old CD.ROM which will be very cheap. Or alternatively temporary install the DVD drive in the computer you wish to install the OS.

You can do everything you need over the network. I do it all day long. Not easy sometimes.

If you want you can share the drive over the lan. May have to make a barts network disk or other type of disk.

I'd need to know more about how you need to use the drive too.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

StuartS is correct that you can't format the OS drive over the network.

You can make a boot cd that when booted would allow you acces to a share that contains a image you could download to the pc but that's not formatting or installing.

You can format and install over a network, that is what the PXE boot option is for.

Here is one such company that makes software for deploying OS's over a network.

THX 1138 I think if you review the actual process no formatting takes place but a image is downloaded
