How do I delete the partition on a Dell 2300 running WinXP? It seems to be different than my pc - which is a Dell, but an 8300.
When I hit the F8 key I get a screen with some options at the bottom like; F12, F2, but nothing that I recognize as a screen where I can delete the partition. I need some guidance please? Thank You

Celeste

download a Windows Me OEM Startup disk from
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm and then you can use the Fdisk on the disk to delete partition. If your laptop doesn't not support Floppy drive, then go to http://www.download.com/CompuApps-SwissKnife/3000-2248_4-10225029.html?tag=lst-0-3
this is a free partition software which allows you to delete, create partition.

just boot from afloppy or cd-rom disk wen in doss mode type fdisk then read away at the onscreen options..
i think its option 3 that allows you do delete dos or non dos(ntfs)partition's.
restart the computer and thats it..
to create a partition do the same thing but in fdisk select option 1 for create partition. then set the partition active.. then from there restaert again and your drive is ready to install on or whatever..

if your drive had more than 1 partition and you wona delete 1 of them you do the boot from cd-rom of floppy on a startup disk and type fdisk again.. then option 4 displays the partition infomation..
then take note of the partition u wona delete then from fdisk select the option 3 i think it is for delete partition and select the one u want deleted.

hope that helps you

What partition are you trying to delete? You may be deleting the one you need to restore Windows XP. IMHO it serve no purpose to compare the hard drives of two totally different Dell model.

Before deleting a partition it is important that you realize deleting a partition will delete all information on the hard disk drive.

First, before deleting the partition determine what partition is currently setup on the hard disk drive by displaying the partition information. To do this from the fdisk menu choose:

4 - Display partition

Once the partition information has been displayed verify the "Type" of partition defined. This may be PRI DOS or NON DOS:

PRI DOS = Primary DOS partition
NON DOS = Non DOS partition

If an Extended and or logical dos partition is defined you will have an option to display that information. Display that information to determine if any logical partition is defined in that extended partition.

EXT DOS = Extended DOS partition

HOW TO DELETE A PRIMARY PARTITION

If you have an extended and or logical partition you cannot remove the primary partition until the extended partition has been completely removed. See the next section for information on how to do this.

From the fdisk menu choose.

3 - Delete primary partition
1 - Delete Primary DOS partition, Select 1 to delete primary partition and enter Volume label as shown above on your screen, if no Volume label is specified just press enter.

HOW TO DELETE A EXTENDED PARTITION

3 - Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
3 - Delete Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS partition, select each
drive letter to delete.
3 - Delete partition or Logical DOS Drive
2 - Delete Extended partition
