Boot to DOS with a bootable floppy and from the A: prompt type format c: /q

use the suggestion from response number 2.
Otherwise you use partition to completel wipe out you system or any hard drive regardless of whether it is the active/system partiton.
Partition makes it easy to prepare my system for a complete do over. I could do all my partitioning in one easy task. It can be done from windows or by those two diskettes created during the install

format c: /q will only work if your partition is FAT or FAT32 and XP is usually used with NTFS. if it is NTFS, then run fdisk with a win98se bootdiak and delete all non DOS partitions, create a primary DOS partition and reboot
