Go to a command prompt.

type

attrib -R X:\Foldername\filename

X being the letter of the external drive

This will remove the read only attribute. If that doesn't work you might also try -H and -S with removes the hidden and System attribute if they exist.

write protected doesn't mean delete protected. Most likely you needed to take ownership of the file before you could delete it. something to keep in mind in the future.
