How do I close PROGRAM MANAGER???

October 25, 2011 at 11:03:44
Specs: Windows XP
I am running Windows XP SP.3 and trying to install Adobe Reader X (I am now using Adobe Reader 9), BUT when I both try and RUN the installer from the browser, AND also try SAVE to desktop, and THEN install the app, (trying from BOTH Firefox AND Internet Explorer browsers) I keep getting a message from an Adobe pop-up box that says that I must CLOSE PROGRAM MANAGER FIRST.

This is at about 96% complete.

I searched for PROGMAN.EXE (PROGRAM MANAGER file name) and found the file in 3 places...
C:\WINDOWS\system32 (FILE VERSION: 5.1.2600.5512)
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 (FILE VERSION: 5.1.2600.5512 (SAME))
C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ (of course, this one is the OLD version.)

The thing is is that FIRST, the PRODUCT and FILE VERSIONS ARE THE SAME, BUT the CREATE dates are different within the system32 and i386 files for PROGMAN.EXE.

SECOND, under PROPERTIES within PROGMAN.EXE, the PRODUCT NAME is Microsoft (tm) Windows (tm) Operating System .

Am I understanding this correctly?

How (can I?!) close PROGRAM MANAGER to install this?

It's driving me crazy that I cannot update/install Reader X!

Can anyone PLEASE help me?

P.S. Does it matter if the browsers are CURRENT VERSIONS? I wouldn't think so, just asking.

Thanks again!!!

How about you just save the download to your desktop and then run the install?

I believe its the install and download that is causing you this issue.

As I stated wanderer, I tried it both ways. RUN and Save then install.

Still same close Program Manager message.

Thanks though.

You missed my point

Either do run and install or save and then install

but don't do both at the same time

This assumes you are downloading from a ligit site and have paid for the product.

One quick google search suggest uninstalling version 9 before installing this one.

OK, I appreciate the advice.

Maybe my writing didn't clearly convey that these WERE 2 SEPERATE attempts doing BOTH ways. :)

(You can't RUN & SAVE at the same time anyway? Can you? LOL)

Anyhow, Un-installing Reader 9 is helpful for sure!

Although, after having already installed Reader X on 2 other systems without incident. (One computer running Win XP and the other Win 7) the installer removed the older Reader 9 version by default so I don't know....but maybe worth a shot.

I guess the ultimate question is WHY is the app asking me to close PROGMAN.EXE? And CAN it BE closed?

Thanks a lot for your help wanderer!

Anything else you have, I'll surely appreciate my friend! :)
