This from the Yahoo help center. Sounds like you may have to get rid of this messenger account, and open a new one. Your basic overall Yahoo ID can't be changed. I've asked.
If you wish to change any of this information in your account, please go to your personal Account Information set-up page.
Here are a few things to remember when dealing with your account:
We do not have the ability to change your Yahoo! ID. You will have to create a new account if you wish to have a new Yahoo! ID. Please note that if you do re-register, you will need to reset all of your preferences for My Yahoo! and other Yahoo! personalized services. Also, information between separate accounts can't be merged or exchanged. You can't sign on to Messenger with two different IDs at the same time. However, you may sign up for another Yahoo! account and switch back and forth between the two. To change the Yahoo! ID on the Yahoo! Messenger and allow another user to log in, or to log in using a different Yahoo! ID, follow these steps:
In the Messenger window, click the Login menu and choose Change User.
In the appropriate spaces, enter the new Yahoo! ID and password.
If more than one person is going to be using the Messenger on the same system, uncheck the Remember my ID & Password option. This will cause the Messenger to request a Yahoo! ID and password each time it is started.
Click the Login button.
The Friend List for the new user/ID will appear in the white window once the connection has been established.
If you forgot your ID or password, please visit the sign-in problems form.
If you would like to remove your Yahoo! account, please visit the account removal request form.
For all other questions/problems with your account, please visit the Sign-in and Registration help site.

For all you self righteous sods above... if you will look through this site you will see from time to time a request from the moderator to post in the right forum. This is not the forum for Yahoo questions. Don't waste people's time!
