My motherboard crashed so I order up new goodies ie motherboard and processor. The new motherboard only has one ide port but something like 8 sata ports so I am trying to switch to sata. Trouble is is that when I plug in my new harddrive a Hitachi 320 the pc hangs at startup on the first startup screen. I got the old hd working but it is really messed up with too many drivers and I don't want to format if I don't have to. How do I get the sata to boot so that I can fresh install xp?

Does the BIOS recognize the hard drive ? If yes, check to see whether SATA is running in IDE mode.

You don't have your BIOS options for the SATA drive set correctly. You may not have the SATA controller you are using enabled in the BIOS. If you have 8 SATA ports you prbably have some sort of RAID available. You don't want to connect to the RAID controllers. If the ports are numbered use #1.
