First of all I hope I am posting this in the right place.
I had some problems a few days back and came in for help. I followed the instruction and everything seemed fine. I don't know if this a new problem or related problem. After running cwshredder,ad-aware, and spybot and not coming up with anything I did the following

scanned with bugdoctor and the results are;
97 invalid CLSID
3 corrupt help files
0 invalid shared tools
32 corrupt shared files
63 corrupt fonts
101 missing shortcuts

scanned with pc doctor oncall, results;
invalid activeX\com file (27 problems)
invalid activeX\com subsection file (27 problems)
invalid application path (4 problems)
invalid microsoft shared files (1 problem)
invalid windows startup (1 problem)
invalid uninstall information (8 problems)
invalid shortcuts 20 problems)

last I scanned with pcpowerscan, results;
105 missing sll/ocx/com classes
2 missing help files
32 missing shared files
7 missing or invalid installed fonts
23 invalid application paths
94 missing shortcuts or invalid path

Any optimizers that would take care of all of these for a resonable price? any other advice? Or help to correct these problems?
Thank You
Bonnie

What was the problem initially that motiviated you to run the assorted utils/tests. Might be useful to know that first - before folks offer advice on how to fix whatever ailed the system.

Ok this is the first I posted copied from security and viruses.

I am really new at this hijack stuff. Like born today. I started with a problem where there was a microsoft window opening a number of times but hiding down below the screen and no matter what I did I could not bring it up. I am able to close it though. Occasionally I go to my home page and it will start to open then close abruptly. If I go to another like yahoo.com or something then the browser will open. At times I seem to end up places that I wasn't aiming at. Anyway my sister suggested that I come here first and ask for help. So that is why I am here. I am hopeing someone will take a look at what I have here and let me know what if anything is wrong.
Thank You
Bonnie

After posting the above and not coming up with a virus but finding the information that I did on pcbug doctor,pc doctor oncall, and pcpowerscan

Have a read of the info at, and then follow the links to assorted utils at:

http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/155566.html

You "may" have a trojan lurking?? Trojan Remover is one util I have (running) on trial. It's shareware - free for 30day trial; it may help find anything lurking - and you may decide to pay for it once the 30 day trial has expired? Regardless it's worth a trial-run? Likewise some of the various other sweepers etc. in the links within the above post/link may be useful here?

Once you have run a few other sweepers (besides those you have already run...) possibly an SFC run will do all that's needed to restore/recover and damaged files? But try a roll-back to an earlier restore point - before running SFC; this is discussed in the link(s) below.

http://www.networkclue.com/os/Windows/commands/sfc.php

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

If that fails... then a Repair install my do all that's needed?

I forgot to say that I did run ckdsk. Ok I ran spyhunter v 1.1. It came up with alot of backweb in registry, then there is a few DyFuCA,eAnthology, microgaming,SeekSeek,All of the above say severe danger, and then there is Media which says it is a medium danger. Then there are some called WinActive and it says these are an unknown danger.

I'd be very suprised if you didn't have few resident nasties still on-board; trojans etc...

Certainly run a few of the utils suggested in the links I posted earlier; and definitely run Trojan Remover (at least for the 30 day trial period). Also download/install Zonealarm - the firewall util (the freebie version). It will also offer significant protection from many assorted irritants (in/out).

To go to the link I've posted (and then the various others in the forum location to which my link will take you) you copy (or type) the entire line (as is) into the url (address) location in your browser and press Enter.

You will (should) then go to each location.

I don't post active (hyper-links) here in my posts at present; they're not an area I'm familiar with - yet.

So highlight the whole line:

http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/155566.html

and use the Edit/copy command on the Internet Explorer top menu-bar (or right-click on the mouse) and use the copy option. Then paste that copied line into the address location on the browser etc... Or simply type that whole line into the address location. Personally I'd copy and paste...

I am sorry I do know how to copy and paste, I guess I just thought the information you were giving me was suppose to have hyperlinks somewhere. Anyway I have had zone alarm on my computer for quite along time. Unfortunstely I have had to shut it down occassionally for a few minutes and also I didn't have it set right until just lately.
So far I have found some things that I don't think should be on my computer, they are WSME,Alset,HXDL.exe,helpexpress,couponica,andcouponsandoffers,emsw,emswz000. Coupons and offers and couponica will not let me remove them from add/remove. I get this message when I try WJView Error: could not execute Main:The system could not find the file specified. Also HXDL.exe is not in add remove. I think I do remember seeing it there though, maybe I got part of it but not all of it.

To copy/paste:

Put the mouse cursor at the left end of the line for the computing.net message I posted for you, and then hold down the left-mouse button and drag the mouse cursor across the line to the other end. The text for that line will now be highlighted. Keep the mouse cursor within the end of the highlighted line and click the right-hand mouse button, and select copy.

Put the mouse cursor into the IE address box and delete everything there; then right-cick on the blank IE url/address box and select paste.

The address for that message will now be in the IE url/address box; just press Enter on the keyboard and you go to the message.

Another way to get the line (the address etc for the computing.net post I've given you) into the Internet Explorer (IE) url/address box.

Open any message in the '95 forum; then change the numbers at the end of its 'address' in the Internet Explorer url/address window (they refer to the message which you have opened), i.e. type in the numbers that are at the end of the message I've suggested to you already.

Thus if you opened say message:

http://www.computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/123456.html

you would just change the 123456 to 155566

and press Enter.

Your latest info does seem to indicate you are harbouring an assortment of Trojans/spyware etc. You need to get appropriate utils installed and run them to clean out the mess.

If you still cannot follow gettng to the message suggested earlier, then perhaps it's time to get someone locally to show you how to copy/paste? Also perhaps get a decent XP tutorial manual? There is an excellent series for all the windows OS and apps; Visual Guide to '98, Visual Guide to XP, and so on. Similarly Teach Yourself Windows '98 Visually (or something like that), and so on for each OS. The two series are a Canadian family firm offering; excellent screen-shot type instructions.

Note: depending on how your mouse is configured the buttons suggested above may be reversed? The instructions above are for a (standard...) right-handed mouse configuration. If your is left-handed configured (not very likely?) then the instructions above should be altered accordingly.

Like I said I DO know how to copy and paste. I have used a pc for about10-11 years. I just don't know anything about hijacking and not a whole lot about viruses. That is probably why I have called my computers "Haunted" at times. The programs I normally use don't seem to be of much use to me. I thought that from hjt you could tell not only registry problems but viruses and trojans as well. I agree with you though it is time to get the wallet out. May I ask which programs you think to be the best? And Thank you so much for the help you have given me.

Sorry I misread the "I do know how to copy paste" etc as "I do 'not' know how etc..."; t'was in a lull in the middle of a long/quiet night-shift... Wasn't meant to offend/insult etc... And it did seem a little stange that you appear reasonably savvy re a PC - yet didn't know how to cut/copy & paste...

The utils I use currently:

Spybot; SpywareBlaster; AdAware; Trojan Remover (the last is shareware... the others are 'free' for personal use - but would appreciate some form of donation...)

Treat them all as you would a virus util; get weekly (or more often) updates.

For a firewall: ZoneAlarm does an excellent job; and there are other freebies out there too.

Another util, BHO Demon lists all Browser Home-page hijackers you may have installed; some of the may be legitimate (Adobe etc.). You have the option to disble them/allow them (possibly uninstall them?)

Also remember that within the link I gave earlier is this reference:

http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/55980.html

It contains within it a list by SVG that includes one site the goes into what many of these pests do etc.

CWShredder does seem to have a few problems at present; the site/link post may cover some of this too?

Post back if you need more help/input?

It sounds like your pc has a lot of "dust" scattered throughout..I would strongly recommend backing up all your data (if you haven't already) and then download AVG, ZoneAlarm and Spysweeper and save them to a CD so you can install without having to connect to internet.

You may not be able to remove all of the ghosts that "haunt" your pc and having all of the above programs will help you get off on the right foot if you have to reformat.

Sometimes the task of tracking down and removing every little bug just isn't worth the effort.

P.S. You mentioned having to disable your firewall at one point. A client recently called me and I discovered they had disabled the firewall And AntiVirus...end result was 216 spyware programs and viruses with over 7000 infected files. Just not worth the risk.

There was review in the UK computer mags recently that did not put NAV/MaAfee in a good light; they came bottom of a group of about eight a-v utils... AVG didn't do too well either, neither did Pandasoft (they were mid-range at best. The top pair were:

Kaspersky and Fprot (in that order) were top; Kaspersky being way ahead of the rest.

Kaspersky found all of a range of 'targetted/specially designed' trojans etc. in a test environment; Fprot managed most...? NAV/MacAfee failed to find them... (and this 'inability' of NAT/MacAfee in that regard has been an experience for quite a few users of those two utils...?)

Kaspersky is slightly more expensive than NAV etc; but it does seem to be the best of the bunch - at least for now (and it does appear to have been in 'top place' for a long time...). It just doesn't get the publicity of the other better known/promoted makes in the domestic (and even corporate) areas?

NAV is very user-friendly, MacAfee a little less so; and both are frequently bundled in various deals etc.... Perhaps this why they seem to most popular a-v utils out there?

I think Bonnie's best appproach really is to back-up all she can; wipe/erase/delete the system entirely and start afresh; and keep a an active fire-wall and a good/reliable a-v util running/up-to-date; also a few cleaner/scaner utils as already suggested.
