I was going to chuck it all and just re install windows so I just would like to know how to get some minor files off of my hard drive. I have another computer here (my desktop and USB flash drives) to copy to. I just want to get some school files off of the hd if possible. I do have XP disks to boot from please help :)

How do you know the registry is all mucked up?

Have you tried doing a repair install?

jam has good advice. it seems like installs never go smoothly, even when you have the CDs. that said, normally what i would do is slave the messed Xp drive and just copy the files from "D:" to "C:". or to CDrom. If Xp is NTFS and other computer is not, bios will see the drive but windows won't. if both are NTFS, should be no prob. be sure to set jumpers correctly on drives if you do the slave operation.

seriously, might be worth expending reasonable time/effort to rescusitating the op.sys on winXP. Another thing i've found is Murphy corrollary #86: if you think it's expendable, 24 hours later you will need something it had.
