Comment:
does anyone know how to have the full filename displayed on the desktop?
On my desktop long filenames don't show all of it. They look like this: longfilena...
What I want is to see the whole filename, like this: longfilename.doc
I don't mean unhiding the extension, i've done that and shorter files name are displayed in full, like: short.doc It's the longer filenames that have the "..." at the end instead of being able to see the whole name.

I found the instructions on techtv.com call for help forum.
If anyone cares...this is how it's done:
Display Properties Appearance Tab Advanced Button "Item:" drop down menu Scroll down to "Icon Spacing (Horizontal)" "150" is the max (not sure why?!) "OK" to close "advanced" window "OK" to close "display properties" window A "please wait..." box appears and the screen fades and then reappears, but it doesn't take effect until you restart.
In order to move the icons closer together I had to disable "align to grid". To do this: Right click on desktop Uncheck "align to grid"
