Comment:

I would like tostart by saying I don't like this cpu or xp. I know nothing about this cpu, so will give you what the sticker on the front says . I have an e machine c2480 w/an amd athon xp 2400= ethernet 10/100, ultra ata 100 (whatever that is), 80 gb harddrive. I'm using comcast(cable), for my internet & don't know thwe best way to hook up a new cpu in the house. I have networking abilities on this but as I'm sure is obvious don't know what is the best way. I don't want to have to rent another modem as my son won't use the same isp, & don't want cables running through the house. If anyoune could give me any ideas I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

I am a little supprised thwe amdxp2400 is a great cpu, the ethernet 10/100 is the lan card that your modem is connected to.

ATA 100 refrs to the hard drive data dransfer speed of 100mbp per second.

the c2480 i can only asume refers to the model of your computer !!! Is it a brand name ( dell, comapq, Hewlet Packard etc) machine or a custom build unit

When you say connecting a new cpu do you mean new or another computer ???

IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT

Thank You so much for responding!!! My cpu is an e machines. I'm trying to hook a cpu into my sons room (new), not a new cpu, it's used , but a new connection. I use hi speed internet & thought since we run through the cable lines anyway maybe there would be an easy solution. My sons cpu is a dell 400 or 4000.

I'm assuming your adding a 2nd PC.

Buy yourself a Wireless router. Then on the 2nd PC add a Wireless PCI card and connect that way.

Both PCs will be routed and be able to run on the same connection at the same time.

As for your son not wanting to use the same ISP as you, Well then you are at a loss there. You would have to have another company come in.

Review:

Wireless Router. $40.00 to $100.00
PCI wireless card. $20 to $40

I believe he is saying that he has a new Emachine computer. His son also has a computer that he wants to share his comcast cable connection without wires in the house.

If so this is what you need:

Either your son's computer or your computer has to be hardwired to the comcast cable which would be the host computer.

Then you must purchase a wireless router and an adapter for the 2nd computer.

That is the only way to share the connection without any wires.

If you go somewhere like Best Buy and tell them what you want to do they will tell you what you need to buy.

Good Luck

Oops sorry I mistype that last post.

Usually the comcast is hardwired to the wireless router for the host computer.

So the cable from wall will go to the Cable modem.

The the Ethernet cable will go the the new Wireless router, Then another Ethernet cable to your PC. Wireless PCI car in your Son's room.

Set up connection in the router and clone your network card.. Wolla, done.

In Windows HELP, click Index, then type:

walkthroughs

Below that double click "Networking"

Tells all about how to connect computers,
and network setup.
Connect an RJ-45 Crossover cable between Ethernet cards, and following the directions in
the walkthrough for setting up the network.
