Alright...when I start up my computer a box comes up and the title of it is "here" and it says "outsideerror=0 success=0" and has an ok button. After the computer is completely booted, my arrow becomes an hourglass when I try to click on the start menu or anything on the start bar. Therefore, I can't open to do a system restore or anything. I am able to click on my icons, but my desktop manager cleared my My Computer icon because I didn't use it much. I am able to log onto the internet but it will not access any websites...can someone please help?

Have you tried resetting in safe mode? If possable take advantage and look in all the registry run's and in msconfig.exe for suspisous apps running on startup.

How do I reset in safe mode if I can't use the start menu to get to the BOOT to select safe mode?

Also, do you think the "here" outsideerror=0 success=0" could be some sort of virus?

Hi hockeygirl29,

I think you've got some sort of virus or spyware on your computer which loads itself when Windows starts.
Can you be specific as to when this message comes up - before or after Windows starts loading?

Windows SafeMode can be entered at the very start of the Windows loading process by pressing the F8 button(bit tricky when exactly). You will then get a menu with choices(Boot normally - safemode - vgamode - ...)

I'll post this first - I'm trying to remember a suggestion by JohnW about a good program that allows you to check and alter the startup stuff on the next boot. I'll let you know when my brain kicks in again...

This message appears after windows is loaded...everything is there, icons, start menu, desktop, everything. I have SpyBot, and cleared all the spyware that it would let me, but my Norton Anti-Virus hasn't been updated for more than a year because I can't get it to update...I checked my task manager for strange things but I couldn't tell if anything was there and shouldn't be

Try this or just Google for every process in taskmanager that seems suspicious:

... oh, and try a free Anti-Virus check.
The Norton site has one, I believe, and AVG is supposed to be a good free one...

Thanks so much for all of the help...do you think whatever this is is also causing my internet to mess up?

I think it's definitely some program that's been designed to mess with your computer & connection at the start-up. A decent VirusScan should solve it - it doesn't seem to be very good at hiding, so it's probably some dumb stuff - but the more time you give it, the more it can do wrong.

Try SafeMode and see if it happens in there too. SafeMode will start Windows with as few drivers as possible, so if you can get in, then do the virusscan first. The program I'm looking for is one that will allow you to select what gets started on the next start-up, but hopefully, the scan will solve the problem.

Found one by JohnW [he knows all the good stuff]
http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/89040.html

I can't seem to find that startup selection program - maybe write JohnW a message(via your MyComputing.net) if the troubles remain.

But I think a virusscan will sort it, so check that first in SafeMode. Computing.net also has a Security&Virus forum, but you really need to find what's causing the trouble first - or maybe try HijackThis, and post the output onto the S&V forum.

Hope you get it sorted.

Use an online version of an anti virus checker. I believe AVG, and several others, has a online version.
