AVG (free) lists an error reading the Host file, can I delete this file? How can I delete it?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Old Salt;
Good to see you're still here.

I don't use AVG so I can't help with the error.

Host files can be corrupted or changed by malicious programs. They can also be protected by third party programs such as Spybot S&D.

I use a Host file and love the advantages. The default one that comes with Windows needs to be replaced with a functioning file.

Perhaps your file is being protected by a third party program. Maybe that's why AVG can't scan it. Just a guess.

Yes it can be safely deleted. Do a search for it on your computer. It is not in the same directory as mine. I use ME.

I suggest that you actually replace the hosts file with a popular one. You may find that your system is more protected from bad sites with a hosts file that prevents access to them.

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hos...

Now AVG may complain about that but check the data and be sure that there is no entry other than 127.0.0.1 and it will be OK.

You will find that a good hosts file or pac file prevents all sorts bad stuff.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.
