I have Windows XP Pro on my Dell and my friend bought Windows XP Pro because he liked it. He told me to install and when I did it finished and said "Complete". But in actuality it wasn't because when it restarted it loaded the Windows XP Pro load screen and didn't reach the login screen. The computer hang there and it was just a black screen. The computer loaded every other min for like 3 secs of something. I didn't know what. I turned off computer and restarted it, it went to the WinXP Pro load screen again and passed but got stuck at the black intermission before reaching the login screen. Any help with this horrible incident. Hanging in a black screen before login screen is teasing me and I want to take a hammer to his monitor. He has a 00' Compaq Presario with 384 ram and 866 mhz motherboard. My Compaq Presario 98' has Windows XP Pro and works fine with built-in video card and sound card, it only has 128 ram. How can his not be working?

Thank you for your help.

Did you format the hard drive and make a fresh install or did you upgrade? Does he have important data on there you need to save? What was on his machine before you put on XP Pro? Does he have the Compaq restore disks? Off the top of my head, not knowing these things I would say to do a repair install of XP from the XP cd.
