Gentlemen, I have recently instaled XP Pro onto this pc. After the xp splash screen disappears, I have a 6 second black screen, then the "welcome" screen comes up. I done a couple of tweaks, but I can't stop thinking; maybe I should have formatted the HD, instead of Installing Pro OVER Home. Also, Windows Media player will not play dvd's. I've uninstalled and installed the video driver 2x. Any ideas? Thanks -ez

Based on results, a clean install is always less troublesome than an upgrade, as for Windows Media, it might serve You better to re-install "the program" .

Does it say you need to download codecs or something? If it does, I had the same problem. I couldn't play DVD's with Media player or PowerDVD.
In the end I installed a really old version of PowerDVD (version 3 I think) and now I can watch DVD's in Media player, but still not PowerDVD!
Sorry if this is a totally useless post!

FIXED IT! Windows never said I needed a decoder. It kept stating I needed to adjust My graphics/Monitor (down) to view dvd. The "album art' photo would show, but it would not play. Anyway, I d-loaded a Win XP dvd decoder, and I'm in business. Play's like a champ!

Summary: I'm surprised your laptop didn't come with the CD also, or a recovery CD. I don't think there is a way to take the files that are preloaded and make a CD or take the Windows XP Home/Pro Cd and make a...
Summary: Essentially Home is just Pro with some of the features turned off. I personally can't justify not having the group policy editor(gpedit.msc), remote desktop, file access control, or file encryption. ...
Summary: Yes, both of them use the NT kernel; in fact Pro is basically just Home Edition with added features like group policies, multiprocessor support, etc. You can compare their features here: http://www.m...
