If you know what's NTBackup but don't have it just because you uses Windows XP Home, don't despair. Go get it from Bob Cerelli's website here

Windows XP Backup Software for Home Edition
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/ntbackup.msi

Run ntbackup.msi and there you go!

NTBackup is avalable with XP Home, it just not installed by default as it is with XP Prof.

Its in the X:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder of your XP Home CD. No need to download something you already have.

For those with the CD, that's true. My XP is OEM however (backup's on another partition) and doesn't include the NTBackup feature.

You're correct but I'm not sure if its included in the XP Upgrade CDs. It's definitely NOT included in the Preinstalled XP version sold on all brand name machines

BTW you can just insert the XP Home CD-ROM.
Navigate to the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.
Double-click the ntbackup.msi file to install NTBackup.

I have the lastest update CD from MS, but saw no options for installing NTBackup. Unless it was included with the big rollup of updates on the CD and not mentioned.

On an earlier posting, some-one said that The MS Windows Backup Utility (NT backup?) would backup to a CD or DVD. I can backup to my removable HD, but get an "Invalid Path" error message when trying to use DVD as the backup medium. What am I doing wrong?

Ted.

Stuart,

As an FYI, TheElderGreeks (http://www.theeldergeek.com/protecting_the_system.htm) explained why NTBackup is not installed by default in Windows Home Edition.

Excerpt:
"Windows XP Home Edition does not support Automated System Recovery (ASR). I've been told this is why NTBackup is not installed by default in Home, but if that's the case why include the item on the Home CD in the value-added directory. Whatever the reason, it's something you need to be aware of in spite of the option for ASR appearing in NTBackup when installed on a XP Home machine. XP Pro users are good to go with ASR"

This is probably another reason why XP Home Edition is often thought to be the crippled sister of XP Pro.

"On an earlier posting, some-one said that The MS Windows Backup Utility (NT backup?) would backup to a CD or DVD. I can backup to my removable HD, but get an "Invalid Path" error message when trying to use DVD as the backup medium. What am I doing wrong? "

You weren't doing wrong. Whoever said this has misspoken without knowing the facts.

Unfortunately, Windows Removable Storage Management does not recognize CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R devices as backup pool media, even though you can add these media types in Removable Storage Management. Ntbackup.exe therefore does not support backup to these devices. This behavior is by design according to this MSKB:

Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q315255

Apart from using alternative backup programs that do support direct backups to CD-R and CD-RW, External hard drives is the ideal media to go with NTBackup.

"Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices".

Okay, I suspected as much. Thanks very much for the confirmation.
