Specs: Windows XP Professional S, Athlon 2400+ 1024DDR

I've got an error which has just started.

I usually keep my computer clean so go into the windows directories and the user directories like local settings/temp etc. I use local settings/history as well.

Now though, if I double click the history folder, I get an error message saying:

"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

When I see which module the error is from, I have this informaion:

"AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: shdocvw.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2800.1692 Offset: 0009d898"

When I hit don't send, I get a final message froma Microsoft Internet Explorer warning saying:

"An error has occurred in Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer will now close. If you continue to experience problems, please restart your computer".

I haven't got IE open and my HT log looks clean. No idea what is causing this.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

AV

Av, Try this: Start>Run then type in:

regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll

Click OK and restart your computer.

Note the spacing is important.

I used that file I downloaded and copied it into system32 and dllcache via safe mode command prompt. It ended up that when I rebooted into Windows, it wouldn't run explorer.exe. No desktop or anything, but I could tell via task manager that explorer.exe wasn't working. Furthermore, when I used the run function from task manager, explorer would still refuse to run.

Suffice to say, that didn't work!

AV, Have you tried a System Restore to the closest date prior to this problem starting? Start>Programs>Accesories>System Tools>System Restore.

I don't have System Restore enabled on my computer. Usually any problems I have are resolved without it and I'm one of them nuts who likes minimal processes running.

Which as it turns out, was a bad idea, but nothing I can do about that now...

Hi again.

Sorry to drag this up but this problem has begun again for me! Everytime I use IEfix it sorts it but it appears to only be a temporary fix as it goes back to broke very soon and I keep needing to use IEfix.

Any other ideas?

Thanks.

AV
