Recommend the following:

Download and run Spybot Search and Destroy:
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/index1.php

Download and run AdAware:
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

Next, use CWShredder:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/cwshredder.html

Run HijackThis! again, and re-post the log.

I was getting the exact same problem with the default home page and websites suddenly popping up. I am a novice with computers so I dont know if this will help. I ran CWShredder and then went to the Microsoft site and downloaded Service Package SP-1 express for Windows XP. I haven't had a problem since with defaulting to search-space.com or the popups. Hope that helps.
