high cpu usage using explorer.exe

for some reason my cpu usage shoots up when i copy or move files in windows explorer. i check my task manager and it shows that for some reason, explorer.exe takes up a lot of the CPU processes.
now, this normally makes sense. but my cpu usage does not drop immediately after completing the task. it takes a few hrs for it to drop back down, if it drops down at all. other times i come back to my computer the next morning and it says explorer.exe crashed.
i have the most recent updated virus definitions from norton.

check your resources under system information and see how much memory you are using after you boot up, if you are getting in the low percentages then you need to upgrade your memory

mikeo,
holycrap. that post u directed me to worked.
i didn't know it was an avi preview problem. what it was decribing didn't seem like the same problem i was having but i tried it out anyway and it solved my problems. by deleting that default registry key i can edit/modify my files in explorer without the increase in cpu usage.
