Hello,
I am using an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ Processor and 256MB Ram along with an Onboard ASUS Motherboard (ASUS A7N266 VML with GeForce2 level 3D graphics, Dolby digital 5.1 audio and integrated LAN). The operating system is Windows XP Professional+ SP1. The problem is that my computer's system consumes up 80-95 percent of the computer's performance. Eventhough there is no program running, this problem still persists. It is as if there is a secret program running in the background which consumes all of the system's performance. But how is this possible? I found out that there could be spywares, adwares or a possible trojan virus in my computer. I cleaned up my computer from all spy and adwares. I also scaned my computer a dozen times with various up-to-date antivirus programs. The only thing I came up was a possible trojan virus called pornovideo.exe within my system32 folder. I deleted the file. I tried everything but there is no imrovement on this issue. The CPU usage still boosts up to 95 percent without much decrease. I recently added an ethernet card on my computer and set up a home-network. The problem still persists and now the computer is much slower in responding. Its absurd that with such high CPU percentage I can open up my programs. This shouldn't have been possible. What could be the cause of this high CPU usage? What are the possible solutions without losing much? I also have a Hijackthis log file but could not understand anything from its readings. Can anyone help me on these readings? Is there anyone out there who can help me out on this urgently? I need somenones help.

Well, I have mentioned that the task manager shows that the system file. winlogon.exe is the one consuming the CPU. It is very absurd that no program is running and the CPU usage in task manager is between 80-100 percent.

Hello,
I've just done the same - set up a home network and obviously added an ethernet card to an XP machine which has an AMD processor and the same thing happened to mine. I found it was the Internal PCI modem eating all of the CPU although it didn't show in Task Manager. Apparently it is something to do with certain modems having less hardware on them and so having to use software to run them - even when they are not in use. The only way to stop it is to Disable the modem in Device Manager - I assume you don't need it anymore anyway unless you want it for other things. Hope this helps.
