Thanks

G'day Developer, you could rename Appwiz.cpl to something like apps.dll [those .cpl's are mostly .dll files anyway] and this will remove it from the control panel but not do any harm and therefore camouflaging it in amongst all the other .dll files and only you will know which one.

Or...

You could also give it a new extension and use the .cpl files' shell\open\command to associate it with control.exe that can be found in the registry and giving it a shortcut to open from a location of your choice.

Or..

You could backup [export] the Uninstall subkey from the Registry and delete that subkey [or only entries you desire] which should leave the Add /Remove blank [I have not tried this myself so you do so at you're own peril]. This I expect should have no effect on what's installed but as I said...risky, although I did remove over 40 entires of the SP2 and other updates without a problem from there after backing it up.

If it ain't broke, let me fix it anyway...I need the experience.

Hi Jase, Ronnie Ratt, hello everyone,

Another method is to rename DisplayName to QuietDisplayName within the Uninstall key.

You do that for each program you wish to hide.

The registry key is; HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Here is a screenshot showing where I've hidden Disk Cleaner.

Okay, I tried removing the Change/Remove and other buttons from Appwiz.cpl using a Resource Editor but all I did was remove the button text and made the button a third of the size but still viewable and workable.

The actual buttons might not be gettable or are in a dependency file.

This is a new challenge...I too did not like those buttons !

Prior to playing with buttons Mesich I just put a - in front of the UnistallString and that also hid it, pure guess it was but I think what is being asked is that the program's names stay on the list but not the ability to remove them which I didn't twig to at first.

I think I have also found the button and it seems to be an embedded .js file which won't budge for me.....yet. I'll keep trying anyway, it'll keep my brain active for awhile.

Hi Ronnie Ratt,

To remove the buttons just create a new DWORD Value and set the Value Data to 1.

NoModify - Removes the Change button
NoRemove - Removes the Remove button
NoRepair - Removes the Repair button

The program will still then be listed without any options.

I think it's Remove.js [clever name aye ?] Exescope would remove it so I'll try Reshacker or mabe a Hexeditor [yes, I have backed up the file so I can play with it to my heart's content].

Exactly where does one place these Dwords, I tried in one program then I tried the Uninstall key itself, rebooted and but still little buttons.

Actually I can still use the 98 Add/Remove from XP because I like that one better.

Anyway I'm off to bed now , it's late down here.

Hi Ronnie Ratt,

The new DWORDS go into the same place you find the DisplayName.

Here is a screenshot of the registry with the new DWORD's for a program called 1st Page 2000.

Here is what it looks like now in Add/Remove Programs.

Got it, I still had the modified Appwiz.cpl but changed it back to the original.

So Jase should be happy now

Good one Mesich, good night

[I'm still gonna try removing those buttons from Appwiz anyway]

Hi Ronnie Ratt,

I shall play around with the appwiz also, just getting the day going here.

My pleasure, I've been learning about the registry from you for many years, about 6 years I believe. :-)

Disregard my response #11. I now see that remove.js is part of the appwiz.cpl.

Thank very much guys.

I believe changing the registry will hide the program from all users. Is there a way to hide it from a particular user?

Thanks.
Sion
