hidden program eating my bandwidth

Specs: Windows XP
When my dialup connection is connected even if I am not browsing I see sent and received bytes. If I leave it open even if I don't use any browsing, the sent and received grows high without any limit, to many megabytes. This is making my internet connection very costly. Please help.

Why are you using a dial-up connection ?
I stopped using one in 2001 not long after a high speed ADSL connection became available in my area. It was cheaper than paying for the dial-up ISP's service plus a second phone line connection for the computer.

Do a FULL scan of your system with whatever anti-malware program you have.

Download the free version of Malwarebytes, install it, run a FULL scan of your system, have it Remove everything it finds.

The free version of Malwarebytes does not update itself after it's initial installation. When you use it after the day it was installed, click on the Update tab, Update it, THEN run a FULL scan.
