Hidden directories

June 25, 2008 at 16:07:13
Specs: xp, don't know
I recently became aware of two directories on my computer that I cannot view in my computer and I cannot delete. It is slowing down my computer and saving all sorts of junk from internet surfing in several files. I think it is because of IE7 that I have these stupid directories.

I want them gone. How do I erase them and the contents?

I already tried the 'view hidden files' nonsense and it doesn't work.

I hate microsoft.

Is it a secret or would you care to identify the directories?
If you hate MS so much here are your alternatives.

Actually, they're "folder" and not "directories." :) Regardless, what folders are you trying to delete, and how are you attempting to delete them?

I guess the OP is talking about the Temporary Internet Files folder, and how does one view the content of "junk" files in IE7?

Jennifer SUMN: Actually, they're "folder" and not "directories."
Folders are the Windows GUI's representation of directories. Depending on what the OP means, you might still be right, but "directory" is typically the better (and more universal) word choice.

And I second the name (and location) of the invisible directories.

Razor2.3 is correct. Open a command window and type dir or dir/ad and you'll see DIR's listed. If you type dir/? all references used the term Directory. The command itself is DIRectory.

(Sorry, I had to put in my 2 cents as it bugs me too that they're called folders as opposed to the proper term.)

It's a good day when you learn something

Directories & folders are really metaphors just like the term Boy & Man, or Day & Night. Take a look HERE that clarified the terms. Oh by the way M$ started referring to directories as folders with the introduction of Windows 95 (they had trouble calling folder Icons as Directories in their first successful GUI - Windows 3.1).

Sorry, I was so mad I forgot the directory names:

documents and settings/localservice

documents and settings/networkservice

They only show up in a very old card making program they do not show up in my computer or any other program and I cannot erase them or the files.

I did try the cmd window thing and I forget how to delete entire directories of files. I can't 'rd', remove directory, I have to open the directory and delete all inside. and there are these '.' '..' and '...' things listed as directories within some of the directories and from Windows 98 experience you cannot delete the main directory that have these dots in them.

Is there a way to just reformat my hard drive like I used to do in Windows 98?

Thanks
:-)

I'm not sure what you mean by "They only show up in a very old card making program they do not show up in my computer".

Is the actual path C:\Documents and Settings\Localservice and C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService?

If so, they are hidden by default and part of the WindowsXP OS. You can't easily (and shouldn't) delete them.

If you want to reformat your drive, do you plan on reinstalling XP or something else? Fdisk will work to a point, but not if your partitions are NTFS.

And, just to reiterate, you are now working with "Folders" not "Directories."

I'm just curious as to why you'd want to format though.

They were NOT there on my computer until I had installed IE7 and a New folder has appeared that was not there before and I want them gone.

Uninstalling IE7 did not work to remove the folders.

They are saving countless copies of my temporary internet files AND content.ie5 exsists in each subfolder in these main folders and my computer is so slow it is annoying.

I wanted to reformat to remove the files and folders.

I want them and all those damn copies of all those files gone.

And as for 'showing up in an old card making program', when you click to post an image or something on a card it shows a list of all sorts of folders and files on the computer.

The folders show up on this program but not in any other nor do they show up in My Computer.

It sounds like someone turned on Show hidden files and folders. Congratulations, you're a little less ignorant about the inner workings of your computer.

If you are so damn smart then tell me how I am supposed to remove these folders OR at the very least remove these tons of copies of all these internet files.
