Hibernate keeps on restarting
On my selfbuilt PC I am running Windows XP SP3 Dutch. When I want to hibernate my computer using START --> TURN OFF COMPUTER --> SHIFT + STANDBY the computer hibernates, but as soon as it shuts down it starts again and I am back in Windows.
I have also made a hibernate shortcut with "nircmd.exe hibernate" and the same happens. As a try I have turned the hibernate off in CONTROL PANEL - POWER OPTIONS and applied the change. Then I switched it on again thinking it to be a sort of re-set. But it continues with the problem.
Looking through the Computing.Net Solution Center I found many entries that said that Hibernate and Standby in XP is a problem ? Some questions did not even get an answer. Are there any new views on this problem ?

The problem is not due to XP but rather the mobo ACPI-compliant S4 chip that enables notebook users to use Hibernate, or S3 for standby. For desktop there is no real advantage to use either features. To further simplify my explanation, Standby & Hibernate were designed specifically to help conserve notebook batteries and nothing else.

The keystrokes you specified are simply a longstanding shortcut to restart Windows without a total Power down.
Works, but of dubious value. Seems to take longer than just a restart from Start Menu.
Hibernation is much more Complex, and not intended for Desk top.
Actually WinXP handles Hibernation better than Previous OS's. The problem is mis use/misunderstanding of Hibernation.
There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

It seems that manufacturers of desktop motherboards vary in their attempts to make their motherboards compatible with Standby and Hibernate. Some motherboards work fine, some work sometimes, and some do not work at all.
