Hibernate doesn't work

I used to use hibernate every day to continue work in progress. I installed XP and in the process I somehow failed to uninstall 98SE. So, I have a dual boot. I disabled the 98SE boot, so now it always boots XP. When I hibernate the XP screen it hibernates okay, but it will not resume. I just get a black screen. When I restart I get a choice to continue trying to resume or to start fresh with XP. Can I make the hibernate effecive with XP?
