Hi, Im am help out my girlfriend on a small(MAJOR)problem and i was wondering if anyone can help, it seems that all the .exe, .com, .lnk, .reg and all the others dont actually work. i have narrowed it down to the registry that is at fault but i am unable to get in. i dont know much about computers but i know tht i have changed the regefit.exe file to .com and it still doesnt work, it actually replecates the regedit.exe file and adds it back into the windows folder. i have the exefix.reg file but am unable to use it, as the regedit doesnt work,i was just wondering if they had the same problem as i have and knows how to solve this mystry. Thanks

How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 cd you will have to d/l sp1 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. If you don't want SP2 go to autopatcher.com and d/l SP1 and subsequent updates.

Download the file, then select it, right mouse, install.

It doesn't look good; your PC may be infected with the Internet worm called Swen aka Gibe.F It spreads rapidly by way of e-mail, KaZaA, IRC and network shares :-(

Hi Rich246, Chuck2, per, WhitPhil, hello everyone,

Rich246,

Open My Documents

Click on Tools and Folder Options.

Click on the File Types tab.

Scroll down and highlight INF.

Click on Advanced.

Under Actions, highlight Install and select Edit.

Under Action is should show;
&Install, if not change it.

Under Application used to perform action it should show;
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %1,.

There is a space after rundll32.exe another after HinfSection and one after Defaultinstall.

Click on Ok, OK, and Apply.

Now try and run the .inf file kindly provided by WhitPhil.

Best Regards,

Rich246, Go to the link below and download the "INF File Association Fix" which is a zip file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.

INF File Association Fix

Then follow the instructions under "My system is not working. What to do?" at the link below(which XPUser also posted).

Except that it would appear that he is unable to double click on a REG file (exefix above), and will probably not be able to open a ZIP file either because of the file associations that have been mangled.

Rich246, Mesich's instructions in Response Number 8 should also help solve the file association problem.

WhitPhil, You're probably correct and the zip file fix at the dougknox site happens to be a .reg file. I hope he can get the problem corrected. Maybe trying a System Restore to the closest date prior to this problem?

I just encountered this problem myself, and thought I'd share what fixed it. Basically went through the same steps. Couldn't open .exe or .lnk files. Tried using the .exe fix in the .inf format like WhitPhil and Mesich suggested but had the same problem as Rich with the grpconv.exe error.

Anyway...here's all that I had to do to fix it. Download the .reg fix for .exe files, double click it, Windows will give an error that there's no program associated with that type of file, then point it to c:\windows\regedit.exe. You can then do the same thing for .lnk files.

If you havent fixed this yet, you might notice on Dougs page (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm)that you can trick the kernel into opening a command prompt by accessing the task bar.

"If your EXE file associations are corrupted, it can be difficult to open REGEDIT, or to even import REG files. To work around this, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter."

I just did this and was able to fix .EXE, .LNK, and .COM file association coruptions. A Big thanks to Doug for posting the .REG files and for the numerous suggestions on this messagae board.
