I am in need of help with this Compaq Pressario machine that the kids had some fun with. Whenever I try to open any program the Windows picture and fax viewer comes up and gives the message "no preview available" as though it was a picture or document I was trying to look at. I cant restore the system as this happens when I choose this option. I cant even choose any of the options in the control panel. Windows explorer does work fine - up until the point where I try and open an application. One other thing I noticed is that I can actually open a Word document that is saved but I cant open the Word program directly. I also tried booting into safe mode but it wont let me, it just stalls after lots of lines of file paths text. I need suggestions because the f*****g Compaq recovery CD wont work - just tells me to call tech support. Many Thanks in advance for any assistance. Jonesy

To change the program that opens a file 1. Open My Documents. If the file you want is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Search to find it. To open Search, click Start, and then click Search. 2. Right-click the file you want to open in a different program, and then click Properties. 3. On the General tab, click Change. 4. Click the name of the program in which you want the file to open. Notes • To open My Documents, click Start, and then click My Documents. • This change affects all files that have the same file name extension as the file you selected. For example, if you change the program that opens a .jpg file, all .jpg files will open in this program. • You can also change the program that opens a file by right-clicking the file, clicking Open With, and then clicking the program name. If the program you want is not displayed, click Browse.
