There are many free for personal use text editors available.
EditPad Lite is one of them.

What happens when you try to open the file in Notepad? The file's extension is .txt; correct?

Bryan

Thank you both. Have downloaded the one Nigel gave me a link to but it still won't work....it now tells me it is not a valid win32 application?

It is saying that Notepad.exe is not a valid Win32 application or the .txt file does?

If the text file then do you know what it is supposed to be? It's not a virus is it?

If Notepad then you have a problem.

If you can open Notepad the go to File, Open from Notepad's menu to see if you can open it that way.

Where did you get this text file that you need so badly to open? From an email or the internet? If the internet then post the link for further investigation.

Are you sure that you don't already have Notepad? Go to Start, Run, notepad
What happens when you do the above?

Have you tried EditPad Lite?

Bryan

As Bryan mentioned virus I also have the same suspision.look in C:/windows/system32 and see if you have a file named notpad.exe.

If you have ,Delete notepad.exe(this is a virus) then rename the notpad.exe (this is the original xp file)back to notepad.exe.

Good luck

Ok, so open NotePad and then go to File, Open, browse to where you have the .txt file and select to open it from within NotePad.

Your download may have been corrupt. Try downloading it again. Provide the link to the zipped download so I can take a look at it too.

Another thought...You have mistakely associated .txt files with 'application' so it tries to open itself but .txt is not a valid application of any kind.

Right click on the .txt file or any .txt file and select 'Open With'. If Notepad is not on the list of programs select "Choose program". In the popup list place a check in the box near the bottom that says "Always use the select program to open this type of file" and then select Notepad.exe as the program.

Otherwise I suspect you were trying to view the contents of the .zip file with Notepad for which you can not. You must use an unzipping utility such as the one built into WinXP. Once unzipped it shows the .txt file.

I posted the contents of the .txt file into Post #9 but then emailed the information to Dizzy. I then arranged to have the post removed as it contained unlock keys that should not have been posted here.

Dizzy I hope you got what you need.

Bryan

Bryan, thank you so much for all your help, at least I know it was my error not a corrupt file. I think I did go through the unzipping wizard but then when it did that I couldn't see the file because it wouldn't open as detailed originally.
No worries as she's unlocked it on the market now!
I am not very technical so don't know if I did or didn't do anything wrong!
Big thank you for time and effort anyway
:-))
