How do you expect to Install Windows XP if you don't have a Windows XP installation disk.

What three disks did you use to format the drive. A single file called format that comes with all Microsoft Operating System would have done it.

What do you mean by installed the CD Rom?

What are you using to install Windows XP?

I suspect you have installed some version of DOS and are now trying to install Windows from DOS. Cannot be done, you need a Windows installation disk,

The "dreaded blue screen" is there to let you know there's a problem. What you should have done was record the STOP Code & error message, then do a google search using that info. Chances are, you would have found the fix.

Now that you formatted the HDD using the old DOS disks, you can do it all over again the right way - XP does not support DOS. But since the drive has been wiped & you apparently don't have an XP CD, what do you plan to install in it's place?

... you might be lucky! ... it might be luck if you just formatted the main drive.

... but left a recovery partition "intact"

... it might be handy if you posted your grandads pc make and model number.

It sounds like you installed a version of dos.

Have you tried installing from the i386 folder on the xp disk? winnt.exe

In dos
C:\ the prompt
d: enter
cd i386 enter
winnt.exe enter

thanks mate...the three discs were dos, i could not use the format option because the computer would not get past the "dreaded blue screen" so the only option at the time was to format the hard drive

If the computer has an A: drive....floppy, goto

Download a 98 boot disk with cd rom support. You will still need to use the i386 option as it is a dos disk but xp will install.

Insert the floppy....boot the cd rom support....the cdrom will not be listed as D: so keep an eye on what the cd rom drive is idenified as.
Probably H:
Once there just change directorys and runn the winnt.exe.

Hope this helps.
