Specs: Windows XP
i have just bought a hp 1220c deskjet printer however it did not come with any drivers i have downloaded these from the hp website, however i have tried installing the printer but every time i get to the print test page it fails to print and i get the error message failed to print. can anyone please advise as to what i may be doing wrong i have used the default port lpt1 i have tried other ports, unistalling the whole lot and trying to again. i have another printer attached to the machine and it is linked to the usb port. this should not be a problem as i have used machines before with more than one printer attached. it is getting very annoying that it wont just plug and play!!

If you have it connected with usb then the printer port should not be lpt1 - that's for parallel port connection - either use the parallel port or reinstall selecting usb when prompted.

i have tried installing it using the usb port setting but when it tries to print a test page it always fails to print. i am using a toshiba laptop so do not have a parallel connection port, my other printer istalled no problems and normally uses the usb port through a usb connection.

You might try this:

1. Completely un-install any HP 1220 software that may have been installed (HP has a habit of installing a bunch of stuff with its printers).

2. Un-install any software left over from previous printers that you no longer have/use, especially HP printers.

3. Delete any HP 1220c icons left over in your Printers folder.

4. Re-Boot

5. Disconnect your other printer (the one that works) and plug the HP1220c into its USB port. (It shouldn't make any difference, but I've seen countless times when a USB device refused to work when connected to certain ports).

6. Unless you need all the other goodies that come with the HP "suite" for this printer, install only the driver. They are both available from HP Drivers and Downloads. The full package (with all the extra stuff) is dj1074en.exe (11.1MB) and the driver only package is dj1075en.exe (1.6MB).

Did you follow the instructions for installing the HP software? The printer should NOT be connected prior to the install of software/drivers. Uninstall the software & start from scratch. Leave the printer disconnected & reinstall the some point during the installataion, you will be prompted to plug it into the USB port.

Is this what you installed?
