I have urgent need to re-install/repair win XP on my laptop. The system hangs on booting. The DVD/CDWR is bad. How do I repair the OS without fresh install. I cannot afford to loose my applications.

1. try to use the system restore option in XP. Go to START, select ALL PROGRAMS, select ACCESORIES, select SYSTEM TOOLS, and select SYSTEM RESTORE. With this you can go back to an earlier time, when you installed windows for example and when you didnt have this problem.
2. if you cannot restore your system to an earlier time and if your OS works that bad, brother, its better to backup any important information on a cd-rom and re-install windows! theres no other choice!Half Life 2 kicks ass

Non of the suggestions can be applied. (1) The system hangs on boot, so
I cannot get to Start - Programs - etc. (2) The DVD/CDWR is bad, so I cannot backup.

well then youre screwed. try re-installing the operating system. I don't know what you mean when you say that "DVD/CDRW is bad" but if you cannot make a backup of your data, then thats too bad.

Try doing a system restore again by going
to safemode. Try to press on F8 immediately
after you turn it on. A "windows advance
option" should appear on the screen and
choose safemode (not the other safe modes).
Choose an operating system to start and
wait for the log on window to appear (it
would usually take 4 to 5 mins to appear).
Log on as an administrator and just click
on the "no" button on the window that will
pop up saying "Windows is running in
safemode". Then just follow the
instructions on the screen for the system
restore option. If the computer will not
boot up into safemode, there might be a
problem either with the memory modules of
the computer or the HDD. Try to contact the
manufacturer of your computer if it is
branded. You can also try to put in the Win XP CD to
the CD drive and try to change the boot
sequence of the computer from BIOS. You can
tell if the CD is being read if there will
be a message on the screen to "Press any
key to boot from CD". If you will see this
message after you change the boot sequence
in BIOS (make sure that the CD drive is the
first boot device), then that means that
the CD is not bad. Try contacting me again
if none of this will work.ryan_espadilla@yahoo.com

A couple of useful tutorials/links re' repair installation etc. of XP... (and there are many more "out there" via a teoma or google (etc.) style search.)

Thanks for your help.
I pressed F8 and chose safemode. It booted up to the point where it usually hangs....
multi(0)disk(0)partition(1)\windows\system32\drivers\ENECBPTH.sys
Left it on for 5 minutes and it still did not move past that.
Meanwhile, note the following:
I used a network bootdisk and started the laptop. I connected to network drives in other computers. Then I ran ntfspro so as to be able to read the c: drive. I was able to copy files from my laptop and the system never hung even if left on throughout the day. The only thing that points to corruption is when I do an ntfscheck or chkdsk /p, I get errors but there's no way I can correct this since the system is running on read only.
What can I do?

Have you followed the routine at MichaeleStevens' site? It details how to boot with the CD and do a full/proper Repair installation...
There is no pressing F8 etc. as you actually going to boot up from the start with the CD (or the 6 floppies + the CD).

Tried using the 6 floppies to boot but when you choose setup, you get a reply that there is no CD drive and the computer shuts down to reboot.
(My DVD/CDWR went bad - can't even be seen on the CMOS)

If the CD/DVD drive has died then you need to replace it... At the least you will need a CDROM or a DVD-ROM; both are pretty cheap these days too. I picked up a SONY DVD-ROM at a computer fair for £15/$20...
