If you have the CD with the drivers for your modem, try running the Windows 2000 driver. If this doesn't work, you'll need to go to http://www.vanguardms.com/customersupport/drivers.html

there, you'll see that the page for downloading the sm56 driver is unavailable. However, there is an email link to contact them for a driver.

FWIW, if your using the modem for internet and an occassional fax, purchase another modem that is XP compatable. You shouldn't have to spend more than $25-$30, but try the Win 2000 driver first.

Go to this site and download the sm56 Windows XP driver :

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/karldavis/modems.htm

If you have already installed it with some other sm56 driver then you will need to physically remove your internal modem and reinsert in a different slot, then when you restart it will find the PCI device and you will make sure it loads this new driver.

Wake up People! XP is NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE with ANY of the previous DOS BASED operating systems and software. XP no longer has DOS as its base. Get a new modem that is compatible and has the XP software with it. Read carefully before purchasing.

I had the same problem.
You must install the Motorola's drivers 84.40 select the country USA, dont wait for dial tone, and select pulse line.

After 3 instalation of win xp and 5 of sm56 I saw that I had internet connect

Good luck

Ok. I did it. I cant remember exactaly how...but here go's:
-
Download THESE files:
http://home.d2.net.au/~bathurst/W2KPCISM56.exe
http://home.d2.net.au/~bathurst/MotWavSM56.zip
http://home.d2.net.au/~bathurst/SM56PCI.ZIP
-

1. Remove ALL existing modem drivers and files EG C:\WINDOWS\Motorola\
2. Restart.
3. Ignore the "New hardware Found" popup and go to "Control Panel" > "Printers and Other Hardware" > "Phone and Modem Options" > Select the "Modems" Tab > "Add". Select "Have Disk", then "Browse" and Select "Serwave.inf" or "smserial" (i cant remember)from the unzipped "SM56PCI.ZIP", then Install it. I can't remember if it says 'A problem occured' or whether it says 'Installed succesfully'. anyways don't worry what it says.
4. Restart.
5. It Should popup "New hardware Found". when it does, select "Install hardware from a specified location" then select "have disk" > "Browse", then select the unzipped "W2KPCISM56.exe" and install. it should do all this correctly.
6. Restart.
7. IF when you have restarted a "new hardware found" popup shows up, It might say "Modem Audio Device" just use the default microsoft driver for it.
8. If i have Remembered this corectly (which i am SURE i havent) it should dial up. NOTE - Not finnished yet!.
9. You MIGHT have to change the com Port it is on, it will probably be on COM3, which will cause it to connect at slower speeds (EG. 36K). Go to the modem properties and select "Advanced" > "Advanced port settings" and change the com port to "COM2".

there...thats it.
If i were you...i wouldnt follow these instructions exactally. I ONLY used the files that you can dload above. so they DO work. try different drivers in different places...if you know what i mean.

I will leave the files on my Site for a month or so.
Hope it helps! - Static
