Please help, My pc has lost it's marbles. My pictures are slowly vanishing, and They are changing into internet shortcuts. I have saved to cd what i can, but I have valuable Photo's that are irreplaceable which I really need to get back if i can.
some short video clips too are dissapearing, and those that also have turned into internet shortcuts are inaccessable. I'm real stuck, and need help to fix this as soon as, before all what's left of my personal history vanishes forever.
Thanks in advance for all help

run a virus scanner, and if you dont have one go to norton and get the demo it will work the same, it would have to be a virus!

Shut down and boot into the safe mode. That may stop the virus.

I am now virus checked.... All clear. I don't have a virus, and I have done a scan disc too with no probs. Spyware is sorted too. I am not losing any more files at the moment, but I am really really miffed that some very important moments that I had captured have dissapeared.
Serves me right i suppose for waiting until I have a cd's worth of data to save.

So I'm no wiser as to why my pc has done this, and i don't know if it's going to continue, but i am now going to use my head, and transfer anything I put on this pc to my own built pc through my home network! Damn I hate shop built systems.
Thanks to all that helped me, I appreciate all the help.

You may be able to recover some of it with GetDataBack from runtime.org.

Well sorry you lost so much, I use a storage drive so I can just save important things to it, rather than losing everything when the boot drive goes hinky.

Once you have the program installed , open SpyBot and select the "Immunize" icon on the left & Click on Immunize , in the new page .

Then check the box "lock hosts file read-only as protection against hijackers".

If it doesn't have a hosts file you cant lock it, so that tweak will be grayed out.
Have SpyBot install its hosts file.

Note: For those running in "Basic" mode you will NOT see this. You must be running in Advanced mode! To get in advanced mode, a really easy way is to go to Start >> All Programs >> Spybot Search and Destroy >> Spybot Search and Destroy (advanced). Click it. You are now in advanced mode.
Select your download site .
Open Spybot Search and Destroy. After clicking the button that says "Search for Updates" you will see 5 items near the top of the window, "Search for Updates", "Download Updates", UniDo(Europe), "Show Log" and "Help". Next to UniDo(Europe) you will see a "down" arrow. Click the "down" arrow and you will see download site choices (3 in Europe, 1 in USA and 1 in Australia).

To simon... Yes I didn't have to ask to select a program, double clicking auto used windows picture viewer, which is what confused me. Erm, It'll take a while to go through all that help you gave (which i will lol) I'll have to do it tomorrow because i have work and must go to bed lol. but i will repost tomorrow. 1 thing i will say though, is.... it's a shame i don't trust cd's. I have lots that i have backed up, and verified (I'm boring i'll wait 1/2 hour to burn a cd to make sure it's ok, and i buy good rated branded cd's too) but many i have saved i have trouble reading.... If only i could mass store to h/d (I'd need 800 gig spread through my home network minimum lol). some might call me sad, but i have thousands of pictures of my kids, and more of video clips too, but i hate it when I can't re-live something that happened, just because of an error somewhere. I'll post my results of your help in a new thread.
many thanks again to all.

well what i meant is right click and pressing shift will let you tell windows to use the picture viewer case something is telling it not to. also try opening them trhough paint.

as to your storage issues it may work out cheaper and safer for you to buy an icy box
http://www.planetmicro.co.uk/product_info.asp?stockcode=M004851
you can get both sata and ide versions and they can be plugged into either usb or firewire ports.

basically its external housing for an internal drive effectively making it an internal drive. with 200gb drives costing £60 now you could easily use these in the box as stores and yes you can take a drive out the box and put another one in.
