Help solve 5 years old xp lock up problems

Specs: Windows XP SP3, 2400 2048
After 5 years my XP SP3 pc keeps freezing from time to time, generally when copying large directories (say, more than 200 MB). Moving a 11 GB tree directory structure yesterday was a nightmare.

the computer, in these years, has been replaced almost piece by piece (mobo, ram, disk, power,dvd,...). No idea what is the problem. many claim for drivers of attached devices, but after 5 years I can't ever figure out what device is still in place (maybe the wireless keyboard????)

Is there any way to detect, trace, avoid, fix it? has Windows 7 the same problem?

amc, on an 'old' machine, the most likely problem I've heard of is lack of memory. Has yours been amended? Another 'maybe' is a file titled 'index.dat'. It gets read every time and can take quite a while if it’s too bloated. It's like a log file and keeps a record of every site you visit on the web. Empty, it's 32K, but it can grow HUGE. It's a protected file and can't be deleted by normal methods. CCleaner (free @: can get rid of it when it’s ticked (not to worry, it gets rebuilt EMPTY on the next boot.). May not be your deal at all, but won’t cause any harm to try. I run it often (daily as I mess with LOTS of DLs).

(maybe the wireless keyboard????)

Probably....get a different wired keyboard and try, as well as a wired optical mouse.
Also take out all pci cards (leave in the video card) and try you PC that way. Modem & ethernet cards usually cause problems before a motherboard or power supply.
Looks like you've had loads of trouble, could have been a lemon from the start. Maybe consider buying a new PC, that's what I would do

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
