I need help setting up a VPN. I used to get error 800-could not establish connection but I was able to get it to error 678-the remote computer did not respond. I have a dsl modem hooked up to a wireless router. I put the IP address for the modem (static) and on the host computer I set it up to allow incomming connections from VPNs. However, on the host computer, whenever I check "WAN Miniport" and click OK and go back to it and it will be unchecked by iteself. Please tell me what I am doing wrong!

Following is from WinXP Pro's Help and Support files:

Quote
Virtual private network (VPN) connections overview

With the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)or Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP), which are automatically installed on your computer, you can securely access resources on a network by connecting to a remote access server through the Internet or other network.
The use of both private and public networks to create a network connection is called a virtual private network (VPN). The following table describes the advantages of using VPN connections.
End of quote

In reading the above it makes me wonder if you are running a Remote Access Server on your Host machine (as I am not so sure that you can) and which VPN client you are using to establish the connection.

Have you thought of using WinXP Pro's Remote Desktop as it is really quite simple to use?

Again, the Help and Support files offer much info on the subject.
