I am a volunteer at a local Community Service organization that provides donated food and household items, including used PCs, to the needy. Being that I mentioned that I like to tinker with PCs and belong to several PC forums, I was elected to make sure the donated PCs are in working order before being distributed. By the way, this is my first PC with Windows XP and I am not familiar with it. Most of those received have been software/data cleaned but I think the one I am working on now was over cleaned and no system CDs were provided. I know for a fact that the PC runs Windows XP Build 2600. It has 128 mb RAM and a 12gb HD. As far as the manufacturer I am at a loss. Nothing on the tower itself, no splash screen for a manufacturer, and if I go into device manager under computer, it lists the manufacturer as (Standard Computers). Once I was able to finally get it to boot (Many missing system files) I now get a message as follows: "The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update.
Error Signature
szAPPNAME Driver Display
szAPPVER 808678002101008086
szMODNAME i740dnt5.dll
szMODVER 5.0.1.604
Offset 832306EA

shortly after, the PC will freeze and you need to force it to power off to reboot.
I have gone out to Intel and what I have matches both size and version with theirs but there is no download available. The monitor itself is a CTX Model PL9. I have found drivers for the monitor at DriverGuide.com and have downloaded them but there is no installation instructions. If I boot in safe mode everything seems to work and no lockup occurs. The CTX files that I downloaded are ICC Profile files and one INF file. I am not sure the problem is with the Intel driver or CTX driver. Does anyone have any ideas or how to install the CTX drivers?
My second issue is with the modem. I would like to get onto Microsoft's site to check for updates. Under device manager in modems it shows a Conexant Compatible Internal V90, K56flex, Voice, Speakerphone. However if I go into network connections and try to manually create a new connection everything related to dialup is greyed out. If I try to install from my ISP's CD it tell me that no modem or NIC is installed. Again any ideas or thoughts?

Please excuse the length of this post. Any help would be appreciated by me and hopefully a needy receipant.

Thanks,
Tom

With a 12GB HDD and 128MB of RAM, what CPU does this computer have?

I'd suggest you rebuild it with WIN98SE.

Some additional info since my first post:
If I double click on the ctx.inf file all it does is bring it up in wordpad. I also did a run > command > a: > a:ctx1998h.inf and it also just brings it up in wordpad. If I go into control panel > system > hardware > device manager > display adapters and click on the + I get Intel740 Compatible Graphics Adapter. I DO NOT SEE A SPECIFIC ENTRY FOR A MONITOR. If I double click on the Intel740... > drivers > driver details I get two entries as follows: c:\windows\system32\drivers\i740nt5.sys and c:\windows\system32\i740dnt5.dll. If I do drivers > update driver > hardware update wizard and even point to to a:\ctx1998h.inf it does nothing. Any thoughts?
I have been working on the modem issue. From what I have found, the modem is installed on Com3 however when I go into device manager and expand ports it only shows Com1 and Lpt1. I did an uninstall of the modem within device manager, reboot, windows reinstalled the modem but it again put it onto Com3. If I go into the properties for the modem > resources there is a message stating "This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem". If I click on Set Configuration Manually and it is set to use automatic settings I have a conflicting device list:
Input/Output Range 03F8 - 03FF used by:
Communications Port (COM1)
Interrupt Request 04 used by:
Communications Port (COM1)

If I uncheck the Use Automatic Settings it will allow me to change settings but I have no idea what to use. Does anyone know how to force the modem to use Com1 or what setting to use if I leave it on Com3?

Tom

Most "Repair" options for XP require access to an original XP instal CD. Since you don't have one and the system you are talking about barely meets the minimum specs for XP I recommend what badboy suggested. Format the drive and instal 98SE.

I have a second machine, P2 running Win XP, I have had no problems with XP finding the drivers, seems to me you may need to restore the sys files, but without the disks, you're stuffed!
I would think about keeping this PC for spares, becouse its always good to have a spare parts PC hanging around, esp if you intend to rebuild them for the needy, as people won't be giving away top of the range machines.
Hope this helps

Concerning the CTX monitor, I have sent an email off to CTX to see if this monitor is supported under Windows XP Pro.

Concerning the modem, I did a Google search using "winxp com3" and found quite a few people having the same problem. They were able to get around it by deleting everything about the modem and then remove the internal modem and install in a different slot. I may try this to see what it does.

However if CTX says no, I will probably scrap this PC and use it for spare parts as recommended.

Thanks to all and if you do think of anything to try, please let me know.

Tom
