Help! Programs won't open!

June 15, 2009 at 10:19:57
Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, 1.596 GHz / 766 MB
For some reason, my laptop (Windows XP) refuses to open certain programs. It won't even give me a "sorry, there is a big technical error which is giving me trouble." pop up window. I've tried clicking on the icon itself, going directly to the EXE file within the program itself, reinstalling the program, and...nothing. All that happens is my mouse icon goes to the loading symbol, and within maybe 5 seconds it just goes back to normal. It seems like my computer is missing a file or something...
Some of the programs which will not open include: Adobe Premiere Pro, DVD Cloner VI, Sony Vegas Pro, Sony DVD Architect Pro, Daemon Tools (which previously worked fine), ULead DVD Movie Factory, and Myst.
And help would be greatly appreciated.

Export your Application event logs and post in a reply. The error
messages are likely to be there.

kaloskid,
You could also try following the instructions in Response Number 2 in the thread at the link below.

Hmm, tried merging the file as T suggested....still no change. As to the first suggestion, how exactly do I find the Application event logs?
What's strange is that certain programs will open, like Graboid, Civ City III, Magic Disc, Magic ISO, Bitcomet, and Ares. Why do you think this is?

Ok, so I found the App logs, and something called "W32 Time" and something else called "Tcpip" keeps popping up under System as errors. Nothing else remarkable...

Nope.
I'm thinking this might have something to do w/ a big virus I cleared from my computer a few weeks ago... it may have changed the way my computer reads exe files. Any thought?
