My friend is having a problem with her sound driver (I think that's what it is), and neither of us know anything about computers. Whenever it's supposed to make a sound, it just beeps. It started happening after she took it to a computer tech, and he re-formatted it. Does anyone know what is causing this and how it can be fixed?
Thanks for any info. If you'd like to contact her because you need more information, you can messenger with MSN Messenger at w0ntxlo0kback@hotmail.com

This sounds (pun not intended) like it might be the drivers for the sound card.
What you or your friend need to do is find out the model of the soundcard, and see if there is a corresponding website (or use www.windrivers.com) and get the drivers this way.

If the hard drive has been re-formatted then there's a chance the sound card drivers are not installed properly. If you don't know anything about computers then the easy solution is to take it back to the computer tech and get him to sort it for FREE!

How can she figure out what type of sound card she has? I couldn't find any types of sound cards under Device Manager.
And she knew the tech, so he did it for free in the first place. He's really busy and doesn't live very close, so it would be difficult to take it back to him.

If the tech reformatted then the first thing she needs to do is install the motherboard chipset and sound drivers.
If it onboard sound it will be on the disk.

Try Belarc advisor, a small free utility and it will probably tell you the brand of the sound card and any other numbers you may need

When she used Belarc, under Multimedia (I'm assuming this is where it would be listed), it had 3 items: MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device, Multimedia Audio Controller, and Standard Game Port. I searched around for a MPU-401 Midi driver, but I didn't have any luck. I checked www.WinDrivers.com and did a Google search.
Am I even searching for the correct thing?

Aye that's the right place.
Is this a pre-built PC from a manufacturer or one of those home-built ones?
If it is indeed the former, then the manufacturer's website may have the specifications for the PC listed - and in cases like Compaq/HP/IBM even have the drivers available for download.
Sounds (gah sorry for the pun again) like the card is quite an obscure make if the utility didn't pick it up (it's given it a generic name).

I missed something there - the device won't be in that section possibly if the drivers ain't been installed - it will be in an unknown section with an exlamation mark through it possibly - sorry about that - it's 00:40am here and I'm about to retire for the night.
