I just bought a brand new HP computer. I made the mistake of installing a DVD burner before I started up the computer for the first time. It went through all the operating system stuff just fine...but it does not recognize or show that I have a CD-Rom, or a DVD burner. I called HP support, and they say I ruined my computer by trying to install the DVD Rom first, and it voids my warranty! I need help on how to get this up and running!! PLEASE HELP!

If it's new, I'd just take it back to where you bought it for a refund. Just tell them it didn't work for you.

Did you set the jumpers on the drive correctly with the position you put it?
God made men and then rested, God made women and noone rested since..

If they said this they are crazy!

Most likely you do not have the jumpers set right.

The DVD Rom does not have a jumper, it uses a SATA cable to hook up. My mother board does not have a SATA plug, so I had to buy a card and install that. I did not even mess with the jumper on the original CD Rom that came with it. I tried taking out the SATA card, and the DVD drive, put it back to stock, and started it up....but it still does not recognize my CD Rom anyplace, and if I put a CD in, it just spins. HELP!!
Thanks,
Brian

Try the cmos jumper and reset the bios.

Well there is usually a jumper that resets the bios on the board or you can either pull the battery out for a few seconds and put it back and it will do the same thing. You will have to find out the motherboard that is in your computer and get information concerning it to find the cmos jumper. Sometimes it is wrote on the board by the jumper, cmos. Some you just remove the jumper while others you remove from two pins and put on two other pins and then put back. It all depends on what you have.

Have you went into bios and seen if the cd drive shows in the bios?

95% of the tech support people are students in India who are on the payroll cause they need the money, but don't care a rat's ass about the people Hewlett Packard pays them to support. So you can pitch that advice from tech. support out the window.
You haven't ruined your computer, just a good night's sleep for some 19 year old in New Delhi.
Please be very explicit. What are the conditions which occur when you boot up the system WITHOUT the SATA controller installed in the PCI options slot?
As for the motherboard, just post the exact model of the HP system unit from the sticker (usually) on the top.
Are you able to boot up into XP?
If they pulled this s--- on me I'd make a deliberate effort to get the support person fired, but don't look to me as a role model in that regard.
Beauty of the high sierra,
and she's looking out for you.

remove SATA card and DVD payer/writer from your system.
Get into your BIOS and load default settings or BIOS backup. Modern BIOS is "die hard" so there must be an original factory BIOS stored as backup.
Boot up system into XP and make a restorepoint and power off when done.
Insert your SATA PCI card and turn on PC again. Install proper drivers for the card.
Force XP to use original drivers instead XP ones. Power off your PC completly.
Turn power on again and when XP starts go to devicemanager to see SATA card is present and working. Power off the PC and connect DVD device to SATA card. Look into your DVD manual for desired setting (master-slave). Power on the PC, the BIOS on the SATA card should find and report that a optical device (vendor name & nr etc) was found and then boots to XP.In general: try to install SATA card drivers and get the card working before connecting any hardware to it.
This advice was given to me when I installed such a device and encounterd problems like yours.......and it worked.
Do not forget to submit registration of your XP license at MS, XP gets activated by a hardware readout by MS wich you can chance 3 times before you have to call them by phone.
Do not install servicepack 2 before all works fine, can save a lot of trouble.
success
