Hey guys,
My modem has to be reinstalled everytime i reboot. It's an external Ambient 56k modem that runs on the Cirrus chipset. Everytime I reboot the machine and try to connect, it says that the device is not ready and when I open the properties up, the modem is "Not Detected". I have to remove it and reinstall it again and it works.

Any way to fix this? I believe Windows thinks that the modem is gone as soon as I turn the power off, this didn't happen in my previous XP installation as evenif i had the modem switched off, it would still be there.

Help please!

Is the modem supported in XP? On the HCL? XP will run devices not on the HCL, but won't run them perfectly to where you have quirks like that the 1 you mention.

Also did you check to see if the manufacturer has updated drivers for XP?

This actually isn't an uncommon issue with XP.. Lucent modems and some USRobotics modems do it as well. Try doing the critical updates for XP and see if that helps any.

thanks all for your help! tried updating to XP drivers, still the same. it's weird because before i did this format and reinstall, the modem worked even if i had it switched off until i needed it.

i guess i'll just leave the modem continuously on till i find a reason to replace it :)

have a merry christmas and a happy new year!

Just alittle formal information, I work for an ISP doing online and system admin work, from what your saying is that the modem isnt responding... first off as you stated you D@R the drivers.... secondly i would make sure that the modem configuration is set to hardware not software.

I would also consider changing ports, I know thats sounds crazy but ive found sometimes a port doesnt respond like it should and you need to move it around some...

I dont know what dial up company you are using but most should be able to walk you through setting up the modem strings, a popular one is s10=220 which slows down the data packets for a stable conection.

Allthough the tech you speak with might hae other ideas since i dont know what you have for a box, but its worth the call.

Personaly, I believe you said your using a 3com modem, i would get rid of it and get a lucent win modem, they run about 15 bucks and is well worth is all 3com is a high priced brand name.

Hope this helps ya out,
