I had 1050 pictures ready to put on a dvd...i had added about 20...and when i closed the 'my pictures' folder all was well...when i REOPENED..EVERY picture's name has been changed!!! They are all inter-changed!!! I have no idea HOW it happend...can someone tell me how to get it back>??? I spent hours with a tech...they couldn't help me...it will take days and days to get the names all back, IF i can even do it! please help!

Was the actual name of each picture changed,
OR was the ORDER in which they were shown changed ????

What program did you use to add & burn the pictures to DVDs? Some third party apps like to rearrange the file names as they see fit.

I never got to make the dvd! when I saw the mess...sigh..i just stopped...tried everything i could think of to get them back right...restore, etc...say I have 5 pics...one named Amy, one named Bob, Charlie, David and Esau....they are all in order...but Amy is now named Esau,Bob is now Charlie, etc etc...all the names, dates, etc are all mixed up! not ONE pic matches its title!

And you believe it's all caused by some bugs (like THIS) that greeps in Windows, huh?
i_Xp/VistaUser

I have no idea what the cause is...and actually they are not all in order, there are groups that have been moved, also...just noticing this..what is this i Xp/VistaUser? I can't click on it???

Sorry, I still don't know what it is...if you are just writing back to make fun, or whatever, please don't waste my time or yours...this was a project that meant the world to me and no I am NOT a computer whiz...the other strange thing is, I tried deleting one picture..to see if the name would change...and it didn't go to recycle..it didn't go ANYwhere..it just disappeared...and if I'm stupid I guess the super of the techs that I spent over an hour with is too..he said he was stumped..thank you

Without any doubt the problem is either PEBKAC or THIS or both. Having said this I am out of here. Sorry.

I am hoping SOMEONE can tell me what those are...I have no idea, and I don't know how to get help, not knowing...anybody???

Have you scanned for viruses? There may be a virus that randomly switches names of files. That's a little far-fetched, but it's just a guess. As far as getting them renamed the way you had them, I've got no clue. With a project that big I would've been making backups regularly.

Sweet Image, if you're referring to the Gremlins/Mogwai references, "Gremlins" was a HUGELY popular movie that was released in 1984. Look here for more info on that: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087363/
Regardless, if you're sure you didn't change anything as far as the photos are concerned, how can they be in the proper order (the way they were I assume) if the names have changed? I would have to agree with XPUser as far as "PEBKAC" or a virus.
Are you running an up-to-date antivirus? Where did you add the pictures from? Are you sure the photos are on the local drive, and why would you delete something in order to see if the name changed? Do you have your Recycle Bin set to NOT send items there and permanently delete them instead? And, most importantly, do you have a backup from before the problems started?

You're right I should have backed up sooner...just got away from me...as for the virus, I run a scan daily...comes up clear..My recycle is not sent to NOT send items there...the photos were on "my pictures'...I deleted just one..just to see what would happen! I'd try anything at this point..it didn't go to recycle..it just disappeared! I spent most of yesterday and half the nite trying anything I could, including over an hour w the tech person...thank you all for trying to help.

If you deleted the photo, and the Recycle Bin is not set to remove files permanently, then the deleted file would be in the Recycle Bin, UNLESS the folder is not on a local drive. Do you have the original source of the 20 photos you copied recently? Where did you copy the photos from? Are they indeed currently stored on a local drive?
