my computer is a mess. All kinds of things are screwed up, viruses i can't delete...files I can't open, it freezes up, programs don't work....
I figured I better reinstall XP, I was looking for advice on how to do that or how to fix my problem
thanks

What exactly is safe mode? I'll give that a try i guess, there's just so many things wrong, and it seems like norton makes it worse, i guess cause it takes up so much memory?
I have to right click to open my H:/, I can't just double click it, can't change my wallpaper at all, or my homepage. There's adult stuff popping up, I can't restart or shut down properly, can't run scan disk, defrag usually freezes up, now it says I'm missing files at startup, but the worst is that it runs so slow, things don't work, and it black screens every couple of minutes.
I'll try to do the safe mode for starters, thanks, and anything is helpful, please replyjake

Norton isn't your problem. It sounds like you either got a virus or a worm. Something has corrupted your registry. The best thing to do is reinstall windows. when the PC boots, it should say something like press something to enter setup. go into setup and go to boot. make sure that the pc is set to boot from CD first. then save your settings and put the windows cd in. when it boots, it should start loading windows. make sure that you delete the current partitions. then reformat them. if you can format it with NTFS. Then follow the directions. once you're done, go directly to windows update and download EVERY update. Then install your antivirus. make sure you update it regularly and schedule regular scans. if you can, get a copy of Norton Corporate edition. It's the best one on the market from what i've experienced. If you have any problems post another note

Just to say, you should get more RAM.
XP uses all of, at least, 128 to run properly,
and works better.
It slows things down if you have programs
starting and running in the background during Startup.
Also when you open programs, things are slower
if they have to take RAM away from XP.
You should have enough RAM (above 128) for each program you run at the same time.

I have 512MB of RAM. After I got this computer
I installed Anti-virus software, then took it out because of too much slowdown.

I have never actually done this myself, always had computer friends around. How do I actually save my settings, what are partitions, my H:\?, how do i reformat them, and what is NTFS? I can try to look some of it up, but everything seems so in depth and over my head, I'm a little scared to jump in and do it, i'm worried i'll screw it up and not be able to open windows at all. Thanks alot for your help, keep it comin :)

I have 2 kinds of ram, 1 ddr slot that is filled but seems to not help, and 2 of the cheap slots, "i forget what it's called, sdr?
where are some cheap places to get it, any suggestions?

Safe mode just loads the critical files and drivers needed to do diagnostics or remove a virus that is loading on startup. It does not load all the programs, (or most viruses) that are configured to load up in regular windows mode. Just in case you didnt know....to get to safe mode ...
First because you figure you have quite a few viruses I would power down the pc and pull the plug for at least 30 seconds to remove anything from memory. Then restart the pc...as it is booting up keep tapping the f8 key until you get to black screen with menu. Choose safe mode, ok the next screen. Run your av scan.
Reboot when done.
You might get startup errors if any files are damaged or deleted.
Click start> run> type in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes.
Have your xp cd in the cd rom drive.
Windows file protection will repair/replace ruined files.
I would also write down the virus names so you can look em up on nortons site because there will be registry entries and possibly other files you will need to remove manually.
I see also in your computer profile...in the cpu/ram part..1 kind isnt working...Do you have 2 kinds of ram installed???? could be part of the problem...you can't run different rams...If that is the case ...keep the best stick/sticks that match in the first slot or 2
Good luck...post back on how things go.

You have two choices:
One, take the computer back to where you got it and do without.
Two, get a friend who knows what they're doing to put it right and show you how to keep it right.
I appreciate that you are learning, but you're only going to make it worse.
Those who have tried to help are noble. But you have too much to learn before you can carry out their instructions. Sorry to be so blunt.

Jake
As I said earlier...you cant run ddr and sd ram together...it's either/or
Having 2 different kids of ram WILL mess things up, cause crashes, boot problems, Blue screens, reboots. If I were you I would get someone to help with the ram problem then you can fix the virus problem.
I know it cost's fair bucks to take it to the shop but find out what good one is in your area and likely best you take it there. You will get your computer back viruses removed and ram properly set up.
Not knowing what you are doing inside the box...you can really mess things up; static electricity is one of the worst enemies inside a pc. If you don't know proper procedures to prevent such events you can fry almost anything in there.
Once you have your computer running good again...do some research on google about computer security, virus prevention, and general computer maintenance...you will be glad you did.Good luck
