Hi, I have a problem with my CD burner. Ive done just about everything I could to help this situation, and I dont know what to do next. I used to use the Windows Media Player for burning CD's. I have a Sony Viao and I find all the songs I want to copy to the CD playlist, and I put them in the Windows Media Player designated area, but when I want to burn, the button on the upper right that lets you start burning will not highlight, and will not let me press it. Then about 15 seconds later the computer reports an error and the Windows Media Player shuts down. Yes I have checks along side the songs I want to download, and yes these files have been burnt before. To invistigate if my Burner is even working, I put a random cd into the cd burner, right clicked on the start menu, went explore all users, clicked on the CD/RW Drive, and I waited and waited and the burner didnt even read the cd, I couldnt even hear it spining and when it was working before I obviously could. My precious CD burner went from working perfectly everyday to just "garbage"! I really dont think that I installed any weird programs on my computer or anything that would yeild this process and I dont know whats up. Whats funny is I brought my VIAO to Best Buy and I thought thank god, finally I'm going to be able to hear good music in my car, but when I went there they said they couldnt do anything! They even installed the Nero program on my computer and it didnt even work on there. What I'm wondering is do I need a new CD burner? And is there anything I can do to help my situation? Thanks for listening.

First I would open your pc and make sure that all the cables are connected to the cd drive. There should be three cables connected, 1. Ide cable (long flat cable) 2. Power connector (white plug with four wires, red, yellow, and 2 black) 3. Analog audio connector. The audio connector isn't critical so if it's missing don't worry.
If every thing is connected properly you need to see if it is a hardware or software (Windows) problem.
Goto www.bootdisk.com and download a Win98 bootdisk. Boot your pc with the disk and choose to enable cd rom support. Once in dos insert a cd. If your cd drive is d: in Windows it will be e: when using the bootdisk. At the command promt type e: to select the cd drive. Then type dir and see if the files are listed. If the files and directorys aren't listed your drive has probably failed. If the files are listed you may need to reinstall or repair Windows.
Hope this helps,
Sandman
