help, my computer is running 41 processes

Asus A7n8x desktop board

Specs: Windows XP, 2.5 Ghz/512 megs RAM
My computer is slower than molasses in winter and the Task Manager says that I have 35 to 42 processes running simultaneously. I do not know which processes to eliminate or how to prevent them from popping onto my computer. What do I do? I have run virus and bot programs but they have not helped.

You shouldn't expect it to be blazing fast with just 512MB RAM. Try running MSCONFIG:

You can also use CCleaner. Download it, install it (I recommend against allowing Google Chrome to install), then run it. Click Tools > Startup & you can make adjustments (disable or delete) from there.

Need more than 512mb of memory....

In itself the number of processes running means very little, actually almost nothing. What is important is what they are doing. You could have 30 processes running (or fewer) and have a slow computer. You could also have 60 or more processes with good performance.

You need to check in Task Manager to see if any any processes you are not using are consuming a large portion of CPU time or memory. This is what is important, not the number of processes.

Also, check the Black Viper website for service configurations. It'll tell you which services are safe to disable.

Just reload to OEM state would be my suggestion. It get's rid of all those leftovers from un-installed programs that didn't work right. It fixes what it can of the slowness created by too much junk running.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.
