Okay, so it worked fine, and now everytime i put any kind of disc in there, the little light goes on (like it's using the cd drive) and i cannot eject or do anything. when i go to run the disc it says there is no disk and to insert one. in order to get the disc out of there, i have to restart the computer. i've tried uninstalling and rebooting, and same thing. i need to burn a cd, but i can't even listen to one, or view pics on a cd or anything. i know nothing about computers so... but it's been doing this for like a month or longer and it's driving me insane!

Is this drive a CDR only, not a CDRW? If so it is pretty old. The lasers in them only last so long. The drive most likely is toast. You could try a lense cleaning disk on it or try going into device manager and removing the drive there, rebooting and let windows find it again. If neither works I suggest you replace the drive.

Well, I'm not sure. it is a Cd burner too... but that won't work. i used to burn cds on windows media player...
I don't think i really know the difference between cdr and cdrw then. ?
i will try a cleaner first too..
thanks! :)

The earliest burners would only burn to CDR media. Then later on all CD burner migrated to the dual format of CDR and CDRW. CDR is write once. CDRW is write/erase/rewrite. This isn't really important except to note the age of your drive. You may want to consider replacing with a DVD burner. These drives can burn both CD and DVD media and can of course read both CD and DVD. There are several things to know if you are interested in this.

If you are happy that the CD's are clean (especially the underside and especially the centre) The lens of the laser may be covered in muck so get a CD cleaner - if that doesn't work buy a new unit I'm afraid

The problem may not be the lens of the CD burner. A few steps you could try is:

1. Go to start....run....type msconfig and hit enter. then go to the startup tab. You can uncheck most to all of these options.

2. Do a disk cleanup.

3. Remove any spyware and/or viruses

4. Right click My Computer...go to Properties....Go to Hardware tab...then click Device Manager. Click the + next to DVD/CDROM Drives. Then right click on each drive and remove or uninstall.

When you uninstall then you will have to reboot. After rebooting, it will automatically re-install your cd drives.

This should fix your problem. There shouldn't be anything wrong physically with the cd burner. All new cd burners will definately burn CD-R and CD-RW.

Also you could try to re-install your cd burning software.

Burner software wouldn't stop the drive from reading.

Yeah, it won't read or do anything...
So I've uninstalled and reinstalled two times. Still, I put a disk in and the little "busy" light goes on, and I cannot do anything else. If I say to "RUN" D: my disk drive it says to insert a disc even if one is in there...
and then, even if i hit the eject button, the light constantly stays on and the disc won't eject until i restart the computer and then it will give me the disk back.
i think even if i used a disc-cleaning disc, the thing would still act like there was no disk in there...
