i have just up graded my windows mediaplayer and still can not get a picture the sound is fine i'm running xp pro and am pretty much computer illiterate, so please any responses in laymens terms, i can only access the visualisation patterns

Try changing the display settings Color Quality to a higher setting. I had a video that would not play in 16 bit mode but when I changed it to 24 bit mode it played fine.
If you're not sure how to do this, go to Control Panel, Display, then the Settings tab.
