When my son turned on his computer after school today he got this BSOD:
STOP C000021a {Fatal System Error} "The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000080 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
I can not boot into Windows at all. Not even into Safe Mode. Using the Last Known Good Configuration doesn't work either.
I do have an Drive Image backup but it's a little over 2 months old. This is to be my last resort short of reinstalling XP (Ugh).
My guess is that it's a Registry corruption problem. The disk itself checks out OK no matter what program I use to do the check.
Unless someone is familiar with this error message and knows how to get me going again I am thinking that I might be able to use a Restore Point that is on the volume. They are from yesterday.
I did find a method that allows you to actually run the System Restore program but it requires me to get into Safe Mode with a Command Prompt. I can't even do this! And you can't use the XP Console Recovery program to do this.
I do have some programs on hand that allow me to boot into an environment in which I have access to all my files. These are all NTFS btw. One even let's me edit the Registry.
I just created a Drive Image of my 'bad' XP system disk. This is so I can at least recover files like my kid's school files. But I am also thinking that if I do restore from my Image file of 2 months ago I can add my Restore Point Registry files to the image and then resore it. I believe Drive Image will le me do this.
So does anyone know if I can somehow get my Restore Point Registry files to replace the current Registry on my disk. Even if I have to copy files from it to where the Registry lives that might work. The only thing is I am not to savy on where all the Registry pieces are kept.
Sorry for being long winded.
