i have Zone Alarm, and it used to be that svchost.exe was always accessing the internet, but that was okay, because when it wasnt, i couldnt use the internet. Earlier today wmw.exe (?) started to use 100% of my resourses, i dont know why, so i killed it in Task Manager. I didnt think it was a bad program, i figure it was just having a bad day, so i let it run again, however when i restarted svchost no longer asks for internet access, and that means, i get no internet, and THAT means i'm not happy. Could someone please tell me what i can do to put things back to the way they were before wmw.exe went crazy?

briefly looking on google for wmw.exe it appears its used for fax modem or suttn
any way try system restore, see if that fixes it

I believe wmw.exe is the messenger service.
Try this:
Start menu > run > type: "services.msc" > scroll down to messenger and double-click it (to open properties) make sure you select "disable" from the drop-down list > then hit "okay".
Reboot and see how it is...let us know.
Perhaps someone else will have more to offer.

Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want...

I searched my pc for wmw.exe and didn't find any. I also checked the services.msc for the messenger service properties and it indicated the file for messenger is C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs. So wmw.exe must be something else - probably a parasites?

Yeah, I saw something about the fax modem, but I also saw this:
Windows Messaging is also available on the Windows 98 installation CD. To install it, navigate to Tools/OldWin95/Message/Us folder, and run wmw.exe.
Note: Read wmw-fax.txt, in the same folder, for more detailed information on Microsoft Fax and Windows Messaging.I know it's for 98, but it's the only thing I found about "wmw.exe". I found it here.

If you want, you can copy and paste this addy in your browser. I found this info on the Zone Alarm forum. It says you can let svchost access the internet; but NEVER grant it permission to act as a server.
These settings are in the control panel configuration of your Zone Alarm.
I used to always get that pop-up box asking if I will grant access, so I changed my setting to always allow access. But, I definitely set it to deny rights to act as a server. Hope this helps a little!

thanks guys, i decided to do a system restore back to the 19th to get my internet back, then i downloaded Stinger (a free antivirus program) from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
and it came out with this:C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmw.exe
Found the W32/Sdbot.worm.gen virus !!!
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wmw.exe has been deleted.C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCFG.exe
Found the IRC-Sdbot trojan !!!
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSCFG.exe has been deleted.apparently the worm had infected wmw.exe, and coused it to take up all my resources.
